Do you know what your elected officials in Washington have been up to lately? Today they voted on an
AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION.
Hey, this is big news. There have been less than 30 amendments to the original constitution of this country, 10 of them coming on real early on, I think it was called the Bill of Rights or some such.
The burning issue of today was whether to add an amendment against burning the American flag or showing disrespect for the flag in other certain ways, I mean certain other ways.
Wow. This certainly ranks up there with issues such as abortion, equal rights and all that. They've never made it either, but the point is -- burning a flag??? Granted, it is a kind of stupid idea in the first place. If I had a flag, I wouldn't burn it because then I'd have to get another one. Somebody might be watching at the check-out stand and report me -- "this guy must have burned his flag and now he needs a new one". You'd never hear from me again.
With the war in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan, the threat of war in both Iran and North Korea, terrorism, global warming and hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural disasters, immigration, and the list goes on and on, it certainly makes me feel better to know that our Senate and Congress have the time to deliberate on such an important issue as burning a damn colored strip of cloth. I know lots of folks think that you should show respect for the flag, and I feel kinda bad calling it a damn colored strip of cloth, but I'd rather respect what it stands for. Or what I think it should stand for.
I do have to admit, this one reaches a lot farther than Mr. Bush. What is it going to take for the people of this country to get it together?
